Some
Background
The Stockport Underwater Diving Group was formed in 1961 by a group
of swimmers seeking adventure, and became a branch of the British
Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) in 1971.
To
give a sense of purpose to the clubs dive trips, the Stockport and
East Cheshire Marine Archaeological Society (SECMAS) was formed
a year later. For several years the group carried out various projects
including a survey on a 300 year old wreck near Church Bay.
The
group also dived the royal yacht Mary and brought up cannon balls,
one of which can still be seen in the Stockport Museum. A bronze
cannon inscribed with the royal insignia was also lifted and is
now in the Liverpool Museum. Other projects included searching the
Throw for Roman artefacts for a local society, researching the river
at Hayfield, searching the canal at Poynton for mine trucks for
a local society and even to search the Etherow for a body!
One
of this group's most rewarding finds was to locate a lady's lost
wedding ring under the leaves in the deep end of the Blue Lagoon.
The group celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1986 with a dinner
- at the Belgrade Hotel and is looking forward to celebrating 50
years in 2011!
